The Texans' Best Remaining Option At Quarterback Is Colin Kaepernick

The Texans, who will spend the rest of this season without Deshaun Watson after his ACL injury, lost 20-14 to the Colts Sunday. Houston QB Tom Savage was 19-for-44 in passing, with one TD and just 4.98 yards per attempt. He fully admitted that he “played like crap.” As the 3-5 Texans get to work on playing their way out of the ugly wild-card loss they seemed destined to earn, their quarterback depth chart looks like this: Savage, T.J. Yates, and Matt McGloin, who played one season at Penn State under head coach Bill O’Brien. None of those quarterbacks is very good, and all of them are objectively worse than Colin Kaepernick. Even O’Brien knows the free agent should be in the conversation. Whether Houston actually signs Kaepernick is an entirely different story, of course. Texans owner Bob McNair alienated a lot of his players when ESPN revealed that he had compared the national anthem demonstrators to prison inmates, which would seem to be a stumbling block when it comes to signing the player most associated with those protests. Receiver DeAndre Hopkins was so mad at McNair’s comments that he left the facility for the day. Maybe Hopkins will feel less irritated if he never had to try to catch another pass from any of those three lameasses again. Also maybe the team would have a chance of winning some more games. Kaepernick doesn’t know the playbook? Who cares? Tom Savage, we can assume, knows the playbook well and he was terrible against the damn Colts! The Colts had a bottom-five defense through Week 8. Savage was benched during the Texans’ first game; Watson started the team’s Week 2 game—on a Thursday—and ran for a 49-yard touchdown as Houston beat the Bengals, 13-9. The only two people who defended Savage between those games were his agent and Jason La Canfora. Don’t tell me Kaepernick can’t learn this intricate, complex offense on the fly. The Texans are fucked if they go with any three of the clowns currently in uniform. Why not go with someone who has a much better chance of executing this play correctly? Hopkins and Will Fuller deserve a competent quarterback. The Texans are still nominally “in the hunt.” Their answer is not a guy who was second to Brock Osweiler, or a guy who was second to Brian Hoyer, or a third-string guy who hasn’t played meaningful football in almost as long as Kaepernick has. The best possible answer is right there.
